“My time spent in the studio was well worth the stay in Florence, but only a portion of the experience. Frank and Laura were incredible hosts and valuable contacts to have in a tourist centered city.”

“The Florence studio experience is one not to miss out on. Luckily I happened upon this lovely place in my travels. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Frank and Laura are wonderful hosts who provide a unique experience in a beautiful art centered city.”

“Our hosts, Laura & Frank worked so well together to give a novice like myself a renewed confidence in my painting ability.  They  have also given me the practical skills to take my painting and drawing forward, hopefully to another level.  The social side was made all the more enjoyable by the other students that took part in the workshop, and by the efforts of Frank, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Humour was never far from the surface and frequently bubbled over to fits of laughter all round.  Laura was very clear and concise in her tuition, and her encouragement and charm has meant I now miss the 4 hour painting session routine very much. Everything was ready and prepared each morning for us to start painting. Brushes had been washed and paint and medium laid out ready on the palette.”

"I really enjoyed the experience of working in a studio each morning and I appreciated the professionalism of Laura and Frank and the time and effort they put into the week. The whole experience was very enjoyable with some great memories to think over now I'm back home".  -

"Loved every minute, excellent tuition, good company, made new friends.  Ideal for people on their own.  Very well organised".

A student from The International School of Florence, Italy writes:
At The Florence Studio I was able to focus on my creative process and hone my technical skills in a calming and focused environment. In the classroom at my school we didn't have very long classes and there were quite a lot of people, the result of this being difficulty losing yourself in your work. At the studio with Frank and Laura, there was amazing light, great snacks, and kind instruction and advice from both… and also a studio bunny rabbit!. I could go for as long as I liked and I produced more work and better work than I would have with only classroom time. When you have a place that is just for you to work and create art, you truly have something special.

A parent writes:
My son had the distinct pleasure of furthering his painting and drawing skills at The Florence Studio. As a high level Art IB student at the International School of Florence the demand for high quality work was staggering. He wanted to take his art work to the next level and enrolled in private classes at The Florence Studio. He was encouraged to follow his individuality and create an amazing final painting and sculpture, winning the highest honors in art at ISF.
Sincerely,
Kelly Schlegel

A success story:
Back in 2006 I had a choice to make. Splitting my time between formal education, a retail job, and the opportunity to pursue my passion of art that I had kept in the margins and late nights doing my apprenticeship. Having Frank and Laura already in the realm of working artists, I found a lot of inspiration and support to take the plunge. A decade later, I couldn’t be happier. It’s a very fulfilling career and a chance for me to express myself and thrive. I’ll always be grateful for their support and guidance.

A student from Concordia University, Canada writes:
At age 15 I first learned about Florence, a city in which art has thrived for hundreds of years. Since then I dreamed of spending time there, I imagined walking where the most genius artists in history had walked. Finally at age 23 at the end of my first trip to Europe I found myself there. I had planned to stay only 3 days before I met Frank and Laura. When the opportunity came up to live there for a month to study sculpture and painting I couldn’t resist. It was a dream come true.
The Florence Studio gave me the space to develop my skills as an artist tremendously. Though I had been studying visual art in university for 5 years prior to my experience I felt a huge lack in technical ability. My art matured throughout my time in Florence. My focus while I was there was in sculpture, studying under Frank as a mentor. I was taught to truly observe my subject, to find the true dimensions and understand human anatomy. Frank was a devoted mentor who was able to not only teach hard skills but keep in mind the needs I had as an already practicing artist. He adapted his teaching to fit my needs and helped me reach my personal goals.
My time spent in the studio was well worth the stay in Florence, but only a portion of the experience. Frank and Laura were incredible hosts and valuable contacts to have in a tourist centered city. Florence and the surrounding area have beautiful and inspiring attractions outside of what one can find in a tour book. Frank took the time to take me out to the hills for a lesson in Landscape painting which I will never forget. He provided me with suggestions on what to visit in the surrounding area as well. We went to galleries and I was introduced to contacts present in the current art community of Florence. His knowledge of the history of the city is invaluable and taught me so much beyond the practical lessons available in most studio experiences.
As time passed I became more interested in lessons in painting as well. The wonderful thing about The Florence Studio is the variety of services they provide. When halfway through the month I expressed interest in painting Laura made time to take me on as a student as well. She not only helped me develop a hands on understanding for the material, she provided me with reading material and suggestions to continue my learning after I left. When I returned to Canada I had the tools to keep discovering oil painting.
The Florence Studio experience is one not to miss out on. Luckily I happened upon this lovely place in my travels. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Frank and Laura are wonderful hosts who provide a unique experience in a beautiful art centered city. Whether you have a few days in Florence or a long stay, if you are an experienced artist or simply looking for a first experience with art The Florence Studio is a place to check out.

The Florence Studio was a unique experience that offered a way of learning different from university classes. Being able to learn and create work in a relaxed environment helped the creative process. Working with Frank and Laura learning both painting and sculpture in the heart of Florence far surpassed sitting in a lecture hall. It is perhaps one of my fondest memories here in Florence.

A University Professor Writes

An acquaintance, Bo, had been trying to get her painting to the point where it would be a commercial success. She was almost entirely self-taught, but quite talented and seemed to be a bit constrained by her current skills. I arranged for Bo to attend The Florence Studio for several weeks. The objective was to imbue her with techniques that she could use to take a big step upward in her work. She returned from Italy with far more confidence in her talent and now is pursuing painting on a serious basis. In my field, an intense, advanced educational experience is often called a ‘Master Class’. The programs at The Florence Studio are, without exaggeration, Master Classes in art!
